How to fix false positives, dead zones, and duplicate inputs

Sometimes a WAVE installation will receive false touch inputs where nothing touches the screen during regular use or calibration, or will have a blind spot while touch is correctly registering elsewhere on the screen. This advanced troubleshooting guide explains the most common causes of these problems and recommends some fixes.

Diagnosing the Cause

False inputs can be caused by bright ambient lights such as those on a showroom floor or the WAVE's light wall reflecting from the TV screen. The latter cause will typically be accompanied by dead zones in the touch display as well.

Checking the location of a false positive can be done using the Touchjet Present app with a draw test. If the WAVE's touch is unusably erratic, we suggest you start this using a smart remote. Simply open a new sketchbook and draw lines back and forth across the screen. As you draw, the line will jump toward the point of the false input. Identifying this spot can help pinpoint which overhead lights to move, or to show dead zones in the case of a reflected light wall.

Checking for reflection can be done using the infrared sensor included with your WAVE. It produces a light where the infrared light wall meets the sensor box. A working setup will show the light moving outward when the angle adjustment know on top of the android box is twisted clockwise. This means that it will move from Yellow to Green to Red. A reflected light wall will be backwards. To check, twist the angle adjustment knob clockwise. If the light moves from Red to Green to Yellow, the light wall is reflecting from a point somewhere on your screen, as shown in the image below.

Solutions

Fixing bright ambient lighting requires angling the lights less directly toward the TV, and in the case of overhead lighting, can be helped slightly by tilting the lightwall from a green reading to a green-red reading on the IR sensor. Some trial and error is required, as the proximity, angle, and brightness of the bulbs all determine the angle of interference that will disrupt the WAVE's use.

Note: incandescent bulbs have the widest range of IR light emitted among common bulb types. HID, fluorescent, and especially LED bulbs emit narrower bands of IR light, and are easier for the WAVE to filter out, so brightly lit areas using those types of bulb are less likely to be problematic.

Fixing a reflected light wall requires turning the WAVE box's angle adjustment knob clockwise until it clicks, then adjusting the angle of the light wall toward parallel from the outside in. If it is reflecting while flush with the TV due to an unconventional or curved shape on the top/front of the TV set, the Android box should be re-seated further back. The alignment tool can help with this, but with extremely unconventional TV shapes, it might be unable to reach the TV while seated beneath the WAVE. In this case, you will need to improvise with a shim or similar setup aid.
